Our History

The Tarrytown Alliance was initially formed when neighbors came together over the issues raised by the reorganization of Austin’s planning, zoning, and development regulations known as CodeNEXT. The Alliance position is that such a major change in what will be allowable in Austin neighborhoods should provide adequate time for input and ideas from the citizen stakeholders affected.

Our Tarrytown neighborhood is within the established central city that has been targeted for more development. Therefore, we are especially concerned that the timetable for implementing these changes is too short for Tarrytown residents and businesses to become familiar with the issues and implications of CodeNEXT.

The Tarrytown Alliance plans to work with other neighborhood associations and organizations to slow the timetable for adoption down so that important neighborhood concerns are addressed before CodeNEXT is adopted.

Tarrytown is one of Austin’s classic, established neighborhoods located just west of and therefore very close to the University of Texas and downtown. Much of its character comes from its many old, large trees and well-tended residential lawns and gardens.

Situated between Lake Austin and Mopac, and bordered by Lake Austin Blvd in the south and 35th Street in the north, Tarrytown features a variety of homes, from handsome historic older homes and estates to charming bungalows, along with everything in between.

Lake Austin provides all the attractions of the lake, along with popular restaurants at Oyster Landing. Lady Bird Lake, close by as well, is ideal for canoeing, rowing, paddleboarding, and more.

Other recreational opportunities include the historic Lions Municipal Golf Course, West Austin Youth Association, and kid-friendly Westenfield Park, Tarrytown Neighborhood Park and Reed Park.

In addition, Mayfield Park and Nature Preserve, Westwood Country Club (membership required), and The Contemporary Austin Art Museum at Laguna Gloria, with its Marcus Sculpture Garden and Art School, are within our boundaries.

Children can attend Casis Elementary School and O.Henry Middle School, then nearby Austin High School. The recently expanded Girls School of Austin provides another option, and there are several church pre-schools.

Tarrytown offers shopping, service providers, and dining options in several locations, and Seton Medical Center, St. David’s Medical Center, and the new Dell Medical Center are easily accessible. Churches include Tarrytown Methodist Church, Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd, and Westminster Presbyterian Church.
